“Over a million soldiers” – FDP recommends mobilization of reservists

In the debate about a possible reintroduction of conscription, FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr is now intervening. He recommends that the defense minister include the forces that have already committed themselves to the Bundeswehr.

IIn the debate on a possible reintroduction of conscription, FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr has called on Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) to approach reservists.

“The Bundeswehr reserve needs a clear signal that it is needed. Together with the active members, we would have a potential of over one million soldiers,” Dürr told the Funke media group.

Pistorius had repeatedly brought the introduction of compulsory military or service in Germany into the discussion. He also brought the Swedish model into play. It provides for all young people to be mustered, but for conscription to rely primarily on voluntariness. Dürr, on the other hand, called on the defense minister to now specifically address reservists.

Many in the reserve now want to make a contribution, but no offer is made to them. “I can’t understand that, after all, these people have already committed themselves to the Bundeswehr and bring professional expertise with them, which is certainly needed in many areas, such as IT,” said Dürr.
